  • Fumigation conditions

If outside temperature drops below 10°C we will have to heat up the container for a good result. Preventive fumigations are only allowed if request as a quarantine treatment by the importing country (NL). The goods have to be suitable for fumigation:
  • 1. Plastic wrapping: A good penetration and ventilation of the fumigant has to be possible. If plastic wrapping or packaging is present, this has to be perforated for a good fumigation and ventilation. For export to Australia these packaging also has to meet certain requirements: Plastic Wrap Declaration: "This consignment has been fumigated prior to application of plastic wrapping or plastic wrapping used in the consignment conforms the AQIS wrapping and perforation standards as found in the AQIS Methylbromide Fumigation Standard". AQIS Wrapping and Perforation Standard: Gas impervious materials (plastixc wraps, cellophane, film, shrink wrap, aluminium foil and papers that are tarred or waxed, laminated or waterproofed) that meets AQIS perforation requirements do not need to be slashed, opened, cut or removed. To meet AQIS perforation requirements for fumigation, impervious materials must contain not less than four (4) perforations of 6mm diameter/100 cm² or five (5) perforations of 5mm diameter/100 cm². Plastic wraps containing numerous pinholes (at least 6 holes per cm², frequently used for transportation of fruit and vegetables are also acceptable. 2. Free Air Space There must be sufficient free space throughout the enclosure to allow the fumigant to freely circulate around the target of the fumigation. 3. Timber Thickness & Spacing Untreated timber products must have at least one full physical dimension which is less than 200mm thick. Timber and timber product fumigations must be conducted before any surface coatings are applied, unless all parts of the timber or timber product have at least one uncoated surface with a maximum thickness of 100mm from the uncoated surface. Where timber is the target of the fumigation it must be separated by a minimum of 5mm of airspace every 200mm. This separation can be horizontal or vertical. 4. Impervious wrappings, coatings The target of the fumigation must not be coated in materials that will prevent sulfuryl fluoride from penetrating into the target of fumigation such as lacquers, paints, waxes, natural oils, veneers or plastic wraps.
